The Halogen Oven, A New Way Of Cooking Food

The halogen oven is a relitivly new way of cooking that offers many advantages when compare to other more conventional cooking methods. The halogen oven began its live on the television home shopping channels, as the popularity of the halogen oven grew mainstream highstreet retailers picked up on the demand and it became available from them too. Suppliers and manufacturers of halogen ovens, have been best suited to offer their products via the internet and have been able to past on the savings in overheads directly to the customer. Companies like amazon and ebay are also offer halogen ovens at discounted rates when compared to that of the main highstreet retailers.

How Does a Halogen Oven Function?

The halogen oven is a fairly new product relitively speaking and as of yet has changed very little in design, the halogen oven is made up of a glass cooking bowl, this is where food is placed to be cooked, the glass cooking container also serves as a means of retaining the hot air within the halogen oven. This glass bowl sits within a heat resistant plastic housing that serves as a surround to hold the glass cooking container. On top of the bowl sits the halogen oven lid, in this lids is the halogen oven bulb or halogen oven cooking element for which the halogen oven was named. Also contained within the lid is a fan, the fan circulates the hot air within the halogen oven it is this function that both shortens cooking time and cooks food evenly throughout and gives the crisp results of a conventional fan assisted oven that a microwave is simply not capable of. The last external feature of the halogen oven is the controls, these are available in both digital and analog formats and controls the temperature and serve as a timer too. Although there are hundreds of different halogen ovens currently available, with more appearing each day the fundimental design is the same. That is not to say that all halogen ovens are the same there are substantial differences inn build quality, after sale service and useabilty to name a few of the differences.

Halogen Oven the Greener Alternative

When the halogen oven made its first appearance it was marketed, as a fantastic new product that would revolutionise the way that we think about what must have kitchen appliances would be. A few years down the line it is surprising that this product is not more popular than it currently is.
There are many consumers who brought the halogen oven and underestimated the usefulness of this piece of kitchen equipment. Many have reported that they no longer use their conventional convection oven. This is not surprising due to the versatility of the halogen oven, depending of the meal you are cooking, it can be used to steam, bake, or grill to name a few uses. So why is it when presented with such a useful device that people continue to cling to the tradition of having a conventional oven fitted into their kitchen. The very thought of removing it in place of another kitchen appliance cause’s people to blurt out comments like. “I can’t get rid of my oven”. Yet these are the very people who confess to not using their convention oven in the first place. In a world of rising costs and energy it would make more sense to reduce costs where possible.
The advantages of the halogen oven cannot be ignore they are far cheaper to buy from the outset; they cook things quicker and therefore save both time and energy. Another point that is well worthy of mentioning is the fact that are so much easier to clean than a conventional oven, a quick swill under the tap and wipe out and the job is done, some of the halogen ovens even have a self cleaning function to make the job even quicker, this means that there is no need for these harsh cleaning chemicals that are required for oven cleaners.
So why don’t more people have halogen ovens? As with all things there are some disadvantages and they are that they may be too small for you requirements, they can cook a whole roast dinner for the family but if you have a large family it may not be enough cooking space. Another limitation by design is that the halogen ovens are fan assisted so any liquids like soups etc can not be heated in the halogen oven as the circulating air causes liquids to swirl, this is how the self cleaning function works. There is a way to compensate for this and this is use a dish within the halogen oven cooking bowl such as is used for cooking casseroles.
The halogen oven was the sole cooking appliance used by a contestant in channels 4’s popular television program “come dine with me” in 2011.
Seeing both the advantages and disadvantages of the halogen oven it would be nice to see these become more mainstream in the future. Although it would be considered a controversial decision to remove you conventional oven the extra cupboard space you gain would come in very handy to a lot of people with small kitchens. When you consider the fact that it would cost more to have a conventional oven repaired than to buy a new halogen oven it is worth considering a halogen oven as an alternative option.

Who Are Halogen Ovens For?

One of the markets that the halogen oven has really got a grip of is the single person market. These customers are typical living alone or at least cooking for just themselves. These customers are students and house sharers for example. Because the halogen oven is small, when compared with a fully sized normal oven and certainly a lot cheaper the halogen oven has enjoyed growing popularity with these sort of customers. Another popular factor about the halogen oven is that should you decide to move, you simply pick it up and put it in a box to take to your next home. The demand has grown and so has the product base. Halogen oven manufactures have reacted to the demand and have now created a mini halogen oven.

What Size Halogen Oven

As mentioned above there are currently a range of different size halogen ovens. What can be considered the standard size format of halogen oven is usually between 11 and 12 liters in cooking volume. A new alternative to this is the mini halogen oven which has about 7 liters of cooking volume.

What is a Mini Halogen Oven?

A mini halogen oven is functions exactly the same as a full sized halogen oven but is smaller. A full sized halogen oven is about 12 litres in size with the option of adding an additional 5 litres via an extender ring. The new mini halogen oven is typically about 7 litres in size with an optional 3 litre extender ring available. Due to the reduced size there are a few benefits. The first being these halogen ovens are even cheaper than a full size halogen oven. The second being that they are easier to store because they are smaller they can be tucked away into a cupboard quite easily. The third they are easier to clean. The forth they are cheaper to run, they save time and energy which means less electricity. Because of these factors these mini halogen ovens have become very popular in the caravan community and are a really hot topic on motor home and caravan forums. So maybe if you have a family of 7 to feed these mini halogen ovens are not for you but if you are a single person be it a student or single professional a mini halogen oven could be just what you need. With manufacturers including 1 year and some even 2 year warrantees a mini halogen oven is a great addition to any kitchen appliance arsenal.

Halogen Ovens For Healthy Cooking

One of the really great things about the halogen oven is that it can be used as an incredibly healthy way to cook food as there is no requirement to add fats to cook food in a halogen oven.

If you have brought or are thinking about buying a halogen oven with the idea of eating healthier then you will be happy to hear that the halogen oven can be used very effectively to cook food healthily. One of the ways that a halogen cooker is better than most conventional cooking methods is the way that fat is removed and easily disposed of after cooking from all meats. With the use of a simple halogen oven accessory, the low rack, which comes as standard with most halogen ovens the meat is lifted from the base of the Perspex cooking container that is used to house the meal when cooking with a halogen oven. By lifting the meat this creates a gap that allows any fat that comes out of the meat whilst it is cooking to drip onto the base and is then kept separate until it can later be remove and disposed of. Another method of cooking is steaming food with the halogen oven, they perform this function very well especially when used for fish or vegetables. If the halogen oven does not have a steamer tray the best way to steam vegetables is to place each separate type of vegetable into foil and add 2 teaspoons of water then seal the foil with the vegetables in tightly so the steam cannot escape. If the halogen oven has a steamer tray then add 2 teaspoons of water to the base of the glass cooking pot per potion of vegetables then add the steamer tray and place the vegetables on top of the steamer tray. To cook the vegetables use a guide of between 15-20 minutes for fast cooking vegetables like sweet corn or peas and 30-40 minutes for slow cooking vegetables like carrot and potatoes. Use these cooking times as guides as all halogen ovens will cook at slightly different rates and check that food is thoroughly cooked prior to eating.

Why Steam Vegetables in a Halogen Oven

steamed veg Why Steam Vegetables in a Halogen Oven

Anyone who has a halogen oven will know that there is a huge variety of ways to cook food with a halogen cooker and this flexibility is one of the things that attract people to the halogen in the first place. Steaming food is one of the healthiest ways that food can be cooked, after all the only thing being used to cook the food is water. Steaming food gives a great advantage over boiling food, although boiling food is not bad for you it removes a lot of the healthy vitamins and minerals that are contained in the vegetables, boiling vegetables can also make them soft and remove the flavours. When vegetables are steamed they stay crunchy and retain their taste.
How to Steam Vegetables in a Halogen Oven
There are few methods of steaming vegetables in a halogen oven, if you have brought a halogen oven and it came with halogen oven accessories then it is possible that a steaming tray was part of the halogen oven accessory pack. These are very easy to use, simply add 2 teaspoons of water per portion of vegetable you want to cook. The water needs to go on the base of the glass or Perspex cooking bowl of the halogen oven. Once you have added the water place the steaming tray in the halogen oven, these are round and fit snuggle into the glass cooking bowl, then add the vegetables you would like to cook.
If you do not have a steaming tray there is another easy option, create foil pockets in which to place each of your vegetables, for more than one type just use more tin foil pockets. Add 2 teaspoons of water to each of the tin foil pockets that you have made, place the vegetable inside the foil pocket and seal tightly so as to ensure that the steam is not able to escape.
Both methods require roughly the same amount of time to cook, use the measure of how long these vegetable take to cook using conventional cooking methods. For very quick cooking vegetables like sweet corn or peppers allow for between 15 and 20 minutes. Vegetable that cook much slower like carrots or potatoes will require between 30 and 40 minute to fully cook. As all halogen ovens cook food at a different rate check that food is cooked prior to eating.

Mini Halogen Oven Review

Andrew James Mini Halogen Oven Mini Halogen Oven Review

Check For Best Price Mini Halogen Oven

If you have decided that a halogen oven would be great, but you want a smaller halogen oven, the good news is that there are other people like you who have thought exactly the same thing. And where there is a supply of customers manufactors are all to happy to meet that demand. There are a few reasons these ovens have proven to be so popular with certain groups of people. Those who regually only cook for one or two will find that the mini halogen oven is easily capable of cooking meals for them. The mini halogen oven has also been especially popular with the caravan community due to its easy portability and low use of electricity.

Of all the manufacturers there are only a handful that produce mini halogen ovens, there is a clear leader of these this is:

Andrew James 7 Litre Halogen Oven

The Andrew James Mini Halogen Oven offers great build quality and after sales service and excellent value for money, it can perform all of the functions of a full size satandard halogen oven but is only 60% the size of a large halogen oven.

Amazon offer a 45% discount on the RRP available through this link

Features of the Mini Halogen Oven

- Offers at least 5 methods of cooking
- Comes with Norma Miller, Free 128 Page Recipe Cookbook
- Warranty of 1 year
- Includes a spare Halogen Bulb, which is easily replaced
- Comes complete with fantastic halogen oven cooking accessory pack

The Good

There are few things that really separate the Andrew James Mini Halogen Oven from its competitiors and they are:

- The 1 year warranty is not offered with all halogen ovens.
- The after sales service from Andrew James has proved to be very good from real customer reviews.
- Halogen oven technology is based on a halogen lamp heating the air contained within the halogen oven. Like all bulbs the halogen oven bulbs do blow. By including a spare halogen oven bulb and making them replaceable it allows the consumer to continue to use the oven without having to replace the oven. Not all halogen ovens have the ability to change the bulb.
- The accessory pack provided with this halogen oven is really very good, it includes, a high and low rack, a steamer tray, baking tray, lid holder, tongs and extender ring. To get the most from a halogen oven it is recommend to use the accessories. To buy each of these separate can be very expensive and is not cost effective.

The Bad

- Even though it is marketed as a mini halogen oven some customers complained that the Andrew James Mini Halogen Oven was just too small. If you are unsure try the larger Andrew James Halogen Oven

Overall for value for money and the capabilitys of this halogen oven there is not a better offer available for a mini halogen oven. There are cheaper models, however, these do not have accessories so prove to be a false econmy in the long run.

Halogen Oven Toaster Rack

Halogen Oven Toast Rack Halogen Oven Toaster Rack

Another accessory available for the Halogen Oven is the toaster rack like the one pictured to the left. It is a metal rack that generally holds between 8 and 10 pieces of bread to toast. Some consumers report their Halogen Ovens cause bread just to become crispy and not to actually toast the bread a golden brown but like a lot of foods when cooking with Halogen Ovens it takes a bit trial and error, most eventually report success. Alternately you could use the top rack 5 mins at 250c as a good starting guide. Tongs for Halogen Ovens are used for removing food or Halogen Oven Accessories from a Halogen Cooker that is still hot. Halogen Oven Extender Ring

Extender ring Halogen Oven Extender Ring

Extender Ring

This is probably the most popular accessory for the Halogen Oven it allows various degree’s on added cooking space to the oven which is most often measured in the litres. The average standard size Halogen Oven is about 12 litres in size. By adding an extender ring you add on average an additional 5 litres of capacity to your oven as you can see this nearly a 50% increase in volume. Another added bonus that has been found is that by adding the extender ring when cooking more delicate foods it helps to prevent burning them by the foods being further away. If you are buying your Halogen Oven with the intention of cooking large meals then you should definitely consider getting an extender ring.

Andrew James Halogen Oven

Andrew James Halogen Oven Andrew James Halogen Oven

Best Price Andrew James Halogen Oven

I have used Halogen Ovens in the past and actually assumed, due to them being very similar design, that a Halogen Oven was just a Halogen Oven. Well I can tell you that I was surprised to find that the ease of use, value for money and end user satisfaction are all of varying levels across the Halogen Oven range. The research I carried out led me to the Andrew James Halogen Oven complete with accessories.

What to Look for When Buying a Halogen Oven

There are a few important factors to consider when buying a Halogen Oven these are:
• Manufactures Warranty and After Sales Service
• The Size of the Halogen Oven
• Any Accessories Included

Should you choose to buy the first Halogen Oven you see based on price then you are going to leave yourself very disappointed especially if you intend to use the oven on a regular basis. Below is an explanation of each of these factors in relation to the Andrew James Halogen Oven.

What Happens When Something Goes Wrong?

One of the best ways to judge a company’s customer service is how they react when things go wrong. Do they honour their warranty, or do they look for any excuse under the sun to get out of anything that could cost them money. Unfortunately there are companies out there who have given less than acceptable customer service and from my research there are at least 3 major companies that have shown a trend of not delivering to their customers within the Halogen Oven market.

Size Matters

You need to ask yourself, what I am going to use my Halogen Oven for? If the answer to that question is to cook meals for one then maybe the Mini Halogen Oven is what you need, it function the same as a full size Halogen Cooker except they are about half the size. The Mini Halogen Ovens have also proved to be very popular for use in caravans due to the compact size. However, do not under estimate what you can fit even into the Mini Halogen Oven, as you can see with the extender ring fitted a whole bird can easily be accommodated into the oven. The average Mini Halogen Oven has about a 7 litre volume without the extender ring fitted. If you have decided that the table top Halogen Oven is the perfect kitchen appliance for cooking the family Sunday roast then the full sized Halogen Oven is for you. These vary in size but as a guide the average Halogen Oven is about 12 litres in volume without the extender ring. By adding the extender ring you can add about an additional 5 litres of space making a really quite large 17 litre space.

Do I Need Accessories for Halogen Ovens?

The short answer is yes. You wouldn’t expect to cook a meal in a conventional oven without the use of specific accessories, such as oven gloves, baking trays grill racks etc. So it stands to good reason that for the best results when cooking with a Halogen Oven that specific equipment should be used to attain the best possible results when cooking with a Halogen Oven. It is also worth bearing in mind that these ovens really do get very hot so in the interest of safety a lid stand is recommend as the bear minimum when it comes to accessories. Another point to consider before your purchase is, are there any accessories included in the sale with the Halogen Oven. The individual cost of these accessories can soon add up to cost more than the price paid for the Halogen Oven itself.

How Much Should You Expect to Pay?

The Andrew James Halogen Oven is available on the web for a RRP of £89.95 but you can really drill this down if you shop around. The cheapest it is available I have found has been on Amazon who consistently sell this Halogen Oven for Under £50.

How the Andrew James Halogen Oven Stack up Against the Rest of the Competition.

What’s included?

This particular model of Andrew James Halogen Cooker comes complete with the following accessories:
• Extender Ring
• 4 Skewer Forks
• Baking Tray
• Steaming Tray
• High Rack
• Low Rack
• Set of Tongs
• Lid Holder
• 128 Page Recipe Book
• Free Replacement Halogen Bulb

How Big is It?

The Andrew James Halogen Oven is 12 litres, without the extender ring. With the addition of the extender ring the capacity is increased to 17 litres.

Does it Come with a Warranty?

Andrew James has been shown to have the odd problem, thankfully these have been few and far between and every customer review I could find showed good communication and quick action to rectify the problem. They have a Help Line that is open 7 days a week with a contact centre that is based in the UK, there is also a Technical Support department also based in the UK that is open Mon-Fri 9-5. Andrew James also offer a 7 day refund policy if you are unhappy with anything they have sent you. They now also give a 2 year warranty.

What Are Others Saying About It?

This Halogen Oven has received rave reviews from most consumers on the web and has managed to average an impressive 4.5 out of 5 stars from reviewers on amazon itself. Here are some of the comments so far:

• Halogen Oven – Better than expected!
• I would highly recommend this oven.
• Great Service, Great Buy.
• GREAT PRODUCT RECOMMEND 100%

Any Complaints?

The main complaint with this Halogen Oven is the lack of decent instructions that come available with oven. This is a shame because it is something that is so easily fixable. Customers who did struggle with operating the Halogen Oven often went on to buy a Halogen Oven Cookbook to solve the problem.

What is the Halogen Oven

This portable, multi-purpose, table-top oven uses technology that enables food to be cooked using infrared waves from a halogen light source. It cooks up to about 40 per cent faster than a conventional oven, so uses less power and is therefore very economical to run. Halogen cookers will roast, grill, defrost, bake and steam. Conveniently, they just need to be plugged into an earthed mains power socket.

The halogen oven consists of a large glass bowl which rests on a plastic base. The workings are all in the lid which sits on top of the glass bowl. There are two racks: a high rack and a low rack. You can put your food directly onto either of the racks, and each rack can also support dishes and trays.

The lid has a handle which must be used to lift the lid when taking it off or placing it on the glass bowl. The handle also acts as a safety switch; as soon as it is lifted up the machine will turn off. The handle must be flat down for the oven to work – it is very easy at first to forget to push it down flat. There are two control switches. One switch is for the temperature, ranging from 20°C to 250°C. The other control switch is for the time. Select the time by turning the switch in a clockwise direction from 0 to 60 minutes. The halogen oven will not work until the time has been selected. Important – the timer switch should not be turned backwards as it could damage the halogen oven. When the oven is switched off, the timer will continue to run and will just tick down back to zero. The halogen light will turn off when it has reached the desired temperature, and then will turn on again when it needs to come back up to the correct temperature. There is also noise from the motor and the hot air circulating.

Advantages and limitations of Halogen Ovens

Advantages of the Halogen Convection Oven

• Because the halogen cooker uses half the electricity of a conventional oven and about the same as a microwave oven it is very economical.

• It is easy to use – just plug into a 13 amp earthed mains power socket.

• Generally cooking times arc shorter. It cooks about 20 per cent faster than a conventional oven on average.• It is compact and so uses less energy to heat up and so less electricity.

• It is very versatile and allows you to roast, bake, steam, reheat or defrost.

• Foods, especially meat and fish, remain very juicy and moist.

• You can watch your food cooking through the glass bowl.

• For the health conscious, if you choose to cook meats directly on the rack, any fat will drop to the bottom of the oven to be discarded.

Limitations of Halogen Cookers

• The size of the machines may be too small for the number you

• Due to fan it is not ideal for soups or very liquid dishes. And they would have to be covered.

•Some vegetables don’t cook more quickly than in a conventional oven, so you have to take this into consideration when planning your cooking.Rice, pasta, grains and beans are best used pre-cooked, either cooked on the hob whilst you prepare the rest of the dish, or use canned or frozen.
